This paddler is happy today!

The Wisconsin DNR appears to have updated their canoe routes pamphlet at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/StateForests/nhal/documents/NHALCanoeRoute.pdf. I see a few sites on/above the Rainbow Flowage that I haven't noticed before and at the moment don't appear on the property map at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/StateForests/nhal/documents/NHALMap-South.pdf. Maybe they're new?

This excites me on a personal level because I just finished my Partridge-Nixon-Fishtrap project (or as close to finished as it's likely to get), and here comes new stuff to check out! It also excites me on a higher level because I hope it's an indication that the DNR is interested in creating more opportunities for quieter, more spread-out camping.

Above all, I hope that it's a sign that management agencies are taking an interest in sites like PP and the advocacy that they do.

Got some official details on new sites as part of amending the NHAL master plan: https://www.wpr.org/dnr-board-oks-motor-trails-northern-wisconsin-forest

Not wild about the additional motor traffic, but 38 new campsites with water access sounds pretty good. Hoping they're added to some of the quieter lakes.

Hey AH, copying this chain over to this forum so it is a better fit. In that forum, you mentioned the existence of the NHAL and offered the following information:

For sure, eagle. If you've ever caught John Bates at Canoecopia, I spend a lot of time in his neck of the woods.

Here's some map/photo stuff: https://tinyurl.com/yj6ha9uh (cross reference with https://p.widencdn.net/xc7qyu/NHALCanoeRoutehttps://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/StateForests/nhal/maps)

And I've categorized NHAL site and portage photos here: https://new.paddleplanner.com/photos/albumphotos.aspx?album=336 and https://new.paddleplanner.com/photos/albumphotos.aspx?album=428

I haven't ever been able to make it to Canoecopia. Someday my schedule will align with it! I considered this year's online event, but honestly, I'm burnt out on online presentations due to work/Covid. Thanks for the links, I had no idea about this area, having only become enthusiastic about paddling over the last 9 years. I'm putting it on my ever-growing list of areas to check out someday. Thank you so much for the reply and information!

Ben Strege, if you see this, please put this area on the long list of wishes for additional paddling areas to be represented here on PaddlePlanner. The brochure AH linked to is really nice, but Paddle Planner is where I learned about the existence of many of the canoeing areas that are now on my paddling bucket list. As a discovery tool for those of us that aren't familiar with a particular area, PP is invaluable. Otherwise, we don't know what we don't know! :)

Glad it's helpful stuff! I continued my run of blowing up the Other Locations forum with one that's more generally NHAL. :)
