EP #70 Royal River to Mountain Lake

We will be going into the BWCA late August at EP #70 via little john, paddling the royal river, north fowl, moose to mountain lake. I heard of some reports of the Royal River being over grown and difficult to paddle. Can anyone help me determine the degree of difficulty. Also, can you paddle back up the Royal River from North Fowl Lake?
