I'm lucky to be alive. Mainly because my girlfriend wanted to kill me by the time we got to our campsite. Problem #1: She filled in last minute for my nephew, who couldn't make the trip, and she didn't know what to expect. Problem #2: I paired her with my strong-as-an-ox son, who inexperience at paddling to match her speed, meant that he drove their canoe in literal circles in the middle of East Bearskin Lake. My buddy and I had to turn back to give my son some constructive criticism, but it didn't go well. Problem #3, I may have failed to tell my girlfriend that the lake was four miles long and of course we had to paddle into the wind. So by the time we made it to the only planned portage, her head was about to explode. We traded canoes and I paddled with her for the next leg of the trip. Luckily on Alder, the first site was available (my son did paddle on looking for other sites, but came back and we stayed at #707). During our stay, we had one storm roll through that lasted only 20 minutes or so, but hammered us with severe winds and made us all a bit nervous. After that, we had double rainbows over the lake, which was beautiful. This site is very pretty, although up on a rise with a slope down to the lake, and it's hard to find flat ground for tents, although we made it work. Fishing wasn't great, but it was okay and we all had a good time.
