Copyrights & Acknowledgements

I obtained the source data for the website from many different sources. I will try to give credit where credit is due.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Campsites, Portages, & Boundaries

I obtained the base data for the campsites, portages, and lakes from the Superior National Forest Geospatial Data web page. The Superior National Forest data, since it is the work of the federal government, is not under copyright laws within the United States. (For more information, see the Wikipedia article on Copyright status of work by the U.S. government.) However, I have done a lot of work on cleaning up the base data for use on this site, so you must obtain permission to use any of the data on this site.

Entry Points

I have manually placed the entry point positions to reflect the parking lot most likely associated with entry point and do not represent the actual entrance to the BWCA. You must obtain permission to use this data.

I obtained the descriptions of the BWCA entry points from the 2011 BWCAW Trip Planning Guide published by the US Forest Service.

Minnesota Lake Data

I obtained the fish, acreage, lake contour, and other Minnesota lake data from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR). All of this information is found in the LakeFinder on the MN DNR's website. The MN DNR retains the copyright use on all of this data. Paddle Planner.com has filed a lake map license agreement with the Minnesota DNR.

Primitive Management Areas

The base data for the Primitive Management Area (PMA) boundaries were obtained from a brochure published by the US Forest Service about the PMAs. I used the brochure to make the boundaries on the map. You must obtain permission before using this data.

Burn Area Boundaries

The data for the Ham Lake, Cavity Lake, and Pagami Creek burn area boundaries were obtained from the National Interagency Fire Center. This data is not copyrighted since it was obtained from a government agency and is free to use.

All other burn area boundaries were manually produced, and you must obtain permission to use this data.

Hiking Trails

Sioux-Hustler Trail

I obtained permission from Ken Jackson to use the Sioux-Hustler trail data that he has posted on his website.

Quetico Provincial Park

Campsites & Portages

The Quetico campsite and portage data was originally obtained from Dr. J. Archer Harris, who created the Paddler's Campsite Database (PCD). As of May 2014, the PCD has been transferred to Paddle Planner. It is no longer being maintained by Dr. J. Archer Harris. Pursuant to the agreement between Dr. Harris and Paddle Planner, the PCD data is free to be used noncommercially. For any other use, please contact me.

Boundaries & Lakes

The Quetico boundaries and lake data were produced by Benjamin P. Strege under licence from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Copyright © Queens Printer 2011.

Entry Points

I have manually placed the entry point positions to reflect the parking lot most likely associated with entry point and do not represent the actual entrance to the BWCA or Quetico. You must obtain permission to use this data.

Sylvania Wilderness Area

Lake Boundaries

I obtained the lake boundaries from the USGS via The National Map. The data from the USGS is not copyrighted. I have cleaned up the data, though, so you must obtain permission to use the data from this website.

Boundaries, Portages, Campsites, Hiking Trails, and Entrance Station

I obtained the base data from the Ottawa National Forest's GIS page. The data from the National Forest is not copyrighted. However, I did a lot of cleaning up of the data, so you must obtain permission before using any of the data from this website.

"Entry Points"

Sylvania doesn't have entry points like the BWCA and Quetico, but I called the boat launches and hiking trailheads entry points. I manually placed the hiking trailheads, so you must obtain permission to use this data. The boat launches I obtained from the Ottawa National Forest's GIS page. I did not clean these up at all, so you can use the boat launch locations from this website.
