When will the boundaries of the 2026 fires be added as a map layer? It would be helpful when trying to plan fall 2026 trips. Thanks for the great planning tools!

I usually wait until the fire perimeters are set (fires are out) so I don't have to import them twice. I'll look at adding these ones sooner, though.

Ben, I just went through this exercise today updating my Lowrance fishing enthusiast map for the BWCA and Quetico. I have the shape files clipped to just include the 2026 fires affecting the BWCA and Quetico. If it would save you time, I would be happy to send you the clipped shape files. I understand the fires could start back up again and the boundaries might change, but it is a starting point.

The files have been sent. Fingers crossed we don't lose any more areas to fires this year and that the current fires smolder out.

Thanks for the files. I actually decided to take a different path for current year fires. Instead of processing the data myself, I am querying the NIFC and Ontario sources for current year fires. By clicking on the current fires, you can see some extra information, such as size and containment. I am looking at changing a few things on the burn areas to better reflect the age and severity of the fires. If anyone has ideas on how this should be displayed, let me know.

No problem, that makes sense. You are also tracking other paddling areas that I am not focused on, so you needed to look at more data anyway. This should save you time in the long run perhaps.
Personally, I think it would be nice to be able to see at a glance the boundaries of this years fires verses the 2021 fires in Quetico(or prior years BWCA fires), so perhaps a different color shade or pattern. As time goes on these areas will probably be viewed as almost the same give the closeness in years, but for the short term I think users would like to identify the different areas easily.
I don't know how much work it would be but perhaps a way to filter out fires by year or size. Personally I only care about the more recent fires as potential areas to avoid or the major fire areas.
Thanks for updating this as a readily available online resource which is very helpful for planning purposes.
