I have tested many batteries and have recently found an inexpensive but good alkaline battery. The AA batteries sold at IKEA hold more energy than almost any other Alkaline battery and they are the least expensive at $.20 each in a 10 pack.

If you are using alkaline batteries to run a fish detector I recommend 10 batteries in series.  If you want the lightest set up and you are willing to pay for it or you already have a battery holder for 8 batteries I recommend 8 Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.
