Big Island Lake Wilderness

Big Island Lake Wilderness is in the UP about halfway between Manistique and Munising. I have done two solo trips there, October 2011 and October 2012. It's part of the Hiawatha National Forest.

The lakes are small, 5 to 150 acres. The portages are short.

The rolling hills are covered with hardwood forests. A lot of it is white birch. There is birch bark laying around ever where you look. The soil is mostly sand.

Both my trips there I had the whole place to myself. I was the only car in the parking lot and didn't see anybody else while I was there. The first trip another party was pulling in as I was leaving.

No reservations or permits are required. Maps are available at the Munising Ranger Station.

It is relatively close home and I can just go there for a weekend trip. I'm planning another October trip this year.

Thanks for the info and the photo. Small, little-known places like this are certainly jewels.
