Cleft Rock Camp – BWCA Site 1213
I call this site Cleft Rock Camp for the striking cleft rock feature that anchors the space. Perched about 10 feet above Ensign Lake, it offers stunning views and a sense of quiet privacy that’s hard to beat.
There’s one solid tent pad behind the fire pit and another tucked into the woods—less ideal, but usable. The open area lacks good tarp trees, so I recommend bringing extra line or tarp poles to rig shelter effectively.
Fishing from shore was productive, and the walk to the latrine winds through a serene forest scene that feels like a hidden sanctuary. It’s a peaceful, contemplative spot with just enough rugged charm to make it memorable.
Important safety note: There’s a hidden cliff drop-off—about 10 feet down—along the rock face, obscured by pine tree overgrowth. Be cautious when exploring near the edge, especially in low light or with kids.

Nice spot to pull up canoes. Big rock on which one can climb out and sit (a bit of a risky climb). Lovely views. Nice spot for a screen tent as well

This campsite was nestled on the shores of a dank bay that we named Gay Barge bay. Not much to say about the campsite; more waxwings than fish. However, the bay was transformative. Azure blue waters, little underwater foot nibblers, and larger underwater butt pokers. The setting for a perfect bacchanal.

We paddled the entire length of Ensign only to find that all of the campsites were taken. Where did that lead us? It led us to Gay Barge Bay of course. The campsite itself, named classically after the bay of which it overlooks, is a minimally sprawling patch of wonder with few good trees for hanging a tarp. Shade yourselves in the trees back from the campfire and shoreline, but if you cross paths with some rain, it's into the tents you go unless you're able to wrangle up a tarp for protection. We found lots of crawfish in the shoreline waters, but few fish to provide us dinner. Gay Barge Bay itself has a beautiful sandy bottom and waist-deep water. We enjoyed our weekend with a canoe parked between the six of us, laughing and playing in the sunshine. The canoe, also known as a Gay Barge, provides you with an excellent concave table for holding your drinks and snacks, keeping them upright and dry while you enjoy your time in the water. Please, enjoy your stay, at Gay Barge Bay (TM).

Decent landing. Storage for 1 canoe near landing. Any more need to be moved up to camp. Short path up to a nice open kitchen with rock benches and two tent pads. Plenty of hammock spots back in the woods. Nice view from from of camp. Latrine was hard to find as the path to it was overgrown. Fishing was not great in the area. Had better luck on Ashigan.
