BWCA Campsite 1271 on Ensign

The landing at this campsite is about average. It was not overly difficult, but it also was not the kind of landing where I could simply pull up without paying attention, since there were some shallow rocks in the way. The campsite itself surprised me because it is set back and up away from the water. From the landing, you walk uphill on a trail to the main campsite, which sits in a protected clearing surrounded by trees. Because of that, there is not much of a lake view from camp, but it would be a sheltered place to stay. The tent pads are all near the kitchen. There are two large, flat pads on soil and another grassy tent pad nearby. It was not muddy when I visited, but I could imagine the soil pads getting muddy in wetter conditions. The latrine trail also goes uphill through the woods and is about 70 to 75 yards long, which is a little longer than average but not unreasonable.

Stayed here as a kid on my second trip to the BDubs. It is memorable because we came back for lunch after a morning of fishing to a bear in our camp. We were the poster children for lazy campers. Food was all strewn out. Bear ate a loaf of bread and punctured our water jug. We stayed there one more night. I am pretty sure I didn't sleep. Dad says he didn't either but I have never known a person to snore while awake.

Cumbersome landing site, also a frequented eagle spot (at least in 2015 summer) so the entire island point smells like rotten fish. Uphill walk to the actual campsite. Completely enclosed by trees
