BWCA Campsite 1298 on Newfound

This is an interesting campsite because the fire grate sits on a very narrow peninsula on the island. When I visited, it was windy, cold, and wet, so it was not a place I would have wanted to camp that day. The best tent pad was muddy and wet, and I would only want to stay here if conditions were dry. For tents, there is probably one good tent pad when dry and one other possible spot that is big enough but rooty and rocky. The site does have some nice hammock options, so it may work better for hammock campers than tent campers. Because the site is on such a narrow peninsula, the path to the latrine is a little on the longer side. The setting itself is pretty, with white pines, red pines, and cedars around camp, but it is likely to be windy and will also get motorboat traffic. For me, this is a site I would only choose in dry conditions.

Nice site on a beautiful island. Too much motor boat traffic for me to really enjoy it. In any case, we were simply passing through. Stopped to check it out and there is room for a large group with space to spare!

Nice submerged sandy landing on eastern side of point. Wild raspberry bush 10 yards from fire grate. Great sunsets. Deep swimming hole right off the western side of camp. Latrine was deep into forest and very overgrown. Very active bald-faced hornet nest 15 feet from large tent pad. Really noisy with the shuttles and motorized fishermen.
