BWCA Campsite 1550 on Basswood River

Like the campsite just to the north, this site's biggest problem is a lack of level tent pads. There is an open space big enough for a couple of tents, but it slopes significantly toward the water. If that kind of thing doesn't bother you, this is probably a great site for you. The site has a great take-out with a (small) sandy beach with a nice rock for jumping into the water for a swim. The main site is elevated on a nice big rock that could be great for laying things out to dry. The kitchen is nothing special, with only a little seating. The fire grate is right next to a large, flat-ish rock surface that would make a nice meal prep area, rather than putting stuff in the dirt. Having said all of that, I still wish we would have taken the site, since it ended up being 2 more miles of paddling and 2 portages until we found an unoccupied site after this one, and it was much worse than this one.

This site is close to Lower Basswood Falls that you can continually hear the hum of the falls. The two best camp pads are in a grassy bushy area behind the fire grate and very buggy. Good fishing off the site. Caught many smallmouth bass from shoreline.

This was a cool site with beautiful views from all view points of the site. Not far from the pictographs or LBF. Landing was good. Tent spots were reasonable, did have to dodge some rocks and roots but could position the tents to avoid them to some degree. Would be a really nice site for a small group consisting of one or two tents.

Camped here for 3 days. Easy landing for multiple canoes. Great fishing. Caught walleyes off the island next to camp. Great spot to day trip for pictographs. Overall decent campsite. Would stay here again.
