BWCA Campsite 1641 on Basswood

This site would not be my first choice in this area. Had high hopes coming in but found this site to be less desirable. There are plenty of hammocks spots but you need to get creative for a good hang, most situations are less than ideal but doable. For tents spots there are technically two spots but one is very close to the fire and the wind was blowing towards it the entire stay. The second tent spot was okay, nothing spectacular. The site was trashed when we arrived which was really disappointing, quite sad actually. Who comes to the BWCA to trash it? (this did not factor into the 1 star review). The wind at this site was relentless and brutal. The wind seemed to swirl through camp the entire time. We couldn't get a break from it and there was no where in camp to get away from it. Fire wood was picked clean. we had to drop two dead trees to process wood from and it was a haul back to camp. I think most sites in this area would be tough to find wood in but you'll be working for it. We chose this spot cause it looked like fishing from shore would be solid but I wouldn't plan on fishing from shore here. We spent half a day trying different spots and none were easy to get to or easy to fish from.

Although we stayed on the dreariest of days, this was a nice enough site. Room for a smaller group, and a nice kitchen. Plenty of shade (or hammock opportunities) provided by the many mature pines. There is a nice landing, directly in front of the kitchen area, and nice southerly views

I've stayed here a couple times. The last time it seems like they cleared some more space to the west which is very good for hammocks. It also has let some light into the site as it tends to be shady. Had a bear encounter here, maybe a 2 year old. So even though you're on an island, hang your food.

Good for smaller group! Landing-small sand with rock in high water, Tents-2 flat, Kitchen-good flat, Shady-open large trees, Hammock-many good trees
