This site is close to the west end of the portage. There is a short trail from the portage landing, and you need to use the portage landing because the site sites on a 10-foot cliff (so you can't park the canoe closer to the site). Great view. You will see and hear people at the portage. There are a few red pines to give a nice ambience.
Admin Note: The number and locations of campsites in and around the Basswood Falls portage were confusing based on the maps that I had and the existing campsite reviews. The reviews implied that there was a campsite missing on Paddle Planner, so I added it. However, when I explored the area, I found out that there was not a missing campsite; instead, all the maps had the campsites in the wrong locations. I have corrected the locations of the campsites, removed the "extra" campsite, and associated the reviews with the correct campsites. There are four campsites along the portage and two on the northern peninsula. One of the northern campsites can be reached from the portage; the other requires paddling.

It's been a while since we stayed at this site and I'm evaluating from memory, but I remember it being a pretty nice level site. There's a lot of traffic since the 360 rod portage runs next to it, but it settles down a lot in the evening there's a pretty big drop-off to the rapids, so not a good site for sleepwalkers. It was a little ways up the hill and made the long portage a little shorter since we weren't starting at the base of the trail.
