Northern Highland American Legion State Forest Campsite N1 on Nixon

The only campsite on the Undeveloped Nixon Lake. This shallow, mucky, and weedy lake is difficult to access in summer from Nixon Creek and Partridge Creek as the creeks are choked with vegetation. The lake edge itself is thick with lillypads. This is not a good swimming lake and a challenging fishing lake on account of the thick weeds. The site itself is elevated and catches good breezes. The views from the firepit and picnic table are sublime and an eagle perches in a tree nearby. You'll hear trumpeter swans throughout the night. The firepit is newer with a retractable grill and the picnic table is level and new. There are plenty of flat spaces for tents and many good trees for hammocks. The site is very private and quiet - set away from roads. You are not likely to hear motor boats. The latrine is in good condition and set far back and in a private location. The site is located in a State Natural Area and so additional rules and restrictions apply such as no use of drones. This site is part of the Camp Manitowish YMCA Summer camp circuit and may be heavily used on weekends and weeknights between June and September. Arrive early in the day to claim it and have a backup plan.

Nice to have no development on the lake, but REALLY buggy once summer hits.
