Wheelbarrow Falls is located on the Basswood River in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), just east of the confluence with the Horse River, near the U.S.-Canada border in northeastern Minnesota. It lies between Upper and Lower Basswood Falls along a popular canoe route, often accessed via entry points like Fall Lake (Entry Point 24) or Mudro Lake (Entry Point 22/23).
The falls are part of a series of rapids with a total drop of about 6 feet, where the river splits around a large island—Wheelbarrow Falls on one channel and Horseshoe Falls on the other. While scenic, it is not officially classified as a waterfall due to its modest drop.
