I've taken this portage a number of times. It doesn't get easier. The upstream side has a dock to land at - there is no current to worry about above the dam at the dock landing - but don't go past the dock. There's a very small mud shoulder next to the boat launch that you can land your canoe at, but the water is a bit deep here. A wide mowed grass trail leads down past the dam and falls. There is a nice landing on this side with room for one canoe to launch. You'll launch or land clear of any current from the dam. In later summer and fall you'll be launching into very high rice. Follow paths through to the south bank to begin navigating the rice.
