Used the eddies and paddled up most of it into Russel. Finally had to get out on west side and lined the canoe a little ways around the corner and out of the current. On return, we ran it down the middle and didn't hit any rocks. If you know how to read the water and spot hazards before you get to them, and got decent boat control skills, it's easy. If not, maybe you shoud get out and line from stern when going with the current towards Russel. Water levels were normal, maybe a little higher than normal at this time.

We tried to paddle upstream, but failed and had to portage. Coming back through downstream a few days later we also portaged. The portage landings are a challenge, but it is safer than swamping (ask me how I know!).

The portage was not very apparent; couple tandems before me paddled through OK, but I found it tough going in my solo, went ashore & we sort of lined it through.

High water permitted us to transit the channel between Russell and Sturgeon Lakes w/o using this portage. Some eddies and boils, but no whitewater.
