65 rods measured by step counting. McKenzie indicates 40 rods and Paddle planner indicates 101 rods. Neither is correct in my view. I think the issue is this portage is the hardest portage when traveling north to Silence along the 8 portage chain from North Bay Basswood. It has some twists and turns, mud, lots of rocks. There are places where previous travelers have placed cairns to help the rest of us stay the course. It is not the hardest portage but provides a somewhat unpleasant experience.

Longer than listed on the printed maps. 80 seems more accurate. Really pretty portage where the stream crosses your path while running over smooth rock about mid-way through the portage. Not overly difficult.

The Mackenzie map shows this as a 40 Rod portage, but PaddlePlanner's report of this at 101 rods is more accurate. The initial part is relatively easy, but after the turn it became a swamp that is knee-deep in spots. This is the first really challenging portage coming from Basswood, but it is worth it.
