There is actually a "false portage" that leads up to nowhere and can have you turned around in a hurry. The correct portage is on a big slab of rock that extends out into the water a bit. Make sure you use this one and not the false one. The false one is further to the north and even has a big downed tree sawed to give the appearance of it being correct.

We had a bit of difficulty locating the entrance to this portage. It is located along a bearing of 300 degrees as sighted from the campsite in the middle of Shade lake. There is a car sized large rock with a vertical flat face approximately 6o yards to the north of the portage entrance. Look for a grove of old growth pine and the portage is in a rocky cove just to the south of the large pines. The portage itself starts out wet and soggy, then leads gradually uphill until it levels out on the way to the un-named lake.

From the Shade side... portage is not all that obvious. It is steep right from the start.
