In winter, I think I recommend taking this longer motor portage on the south side rather than the shorter north side portage. I have not taken it yet myself, but this is what the dogsleds do. This one is wider and more gradual, which is typically worth some extra length when you're on skis.

We were midway through our Voyageur Challenge route and arrived here at about 9:00 at night. With lights on over at the Canadian Ranger Station, we didn't want to disturb anyone so we opted for the longer motor portage instead. The portage here is a wide gravel road that works up a hill heading towards Birch. Avoid side spurs which can lead you astray.
