Entry Point:11 - Baptism Creek (Quetico)
Type:Canoeing

Portage Dog and I enjoy the challenge of getting to little visited areas. In 2023 we went up a creek that runs into the south east end of kawnipi called Devine Creek. Our first day ended when we found some solid ground about 1&1/2 miles short of Fluker Lake. We were concerned about finding dry ground to camp on so we called it Camp Desperation. We spent one night at Camp Desperation. The next day we moved on to Fluker Lake. We circled the entire lake getting out of our canoes many times to explore looking for a suitable camp site. We picked the best site which had a bad landing, poor canoe storage, ½ a tent pad, one hammock pad with a tree rubbing against the side of the hammock and a place for ½ the kitchen tarp on the hill side. We called it Flukers Finest. We spent 2 nights at Flukers Finest. Mack Lake is only one mile to the east of Fluker Lake. The next day we got an early start and headed for Mack Lake. On the rough terrain we needed to make 3 carries. At about 5 PM we had gotten 2 loads to the top of a hill overlooking a creek and we were exhausted. It had little flat ground but was easy to find by following a moose path. I was able to filter water from the creek so we camped there. We called it Camp Exhaustion. Portage Dog was awakened in the night by a moose wanting to use his path. The rest of that trip was stuff everyone has done you know good fishing and campsites.

Moving on the 2024 we started making our way from Ross Lake up to Home Lake. When night fell all of our gear was at the waters edge of Home Lake except our canoes. There was a flat spot near the water for Portage Dog’s tent and about 30 yards up (and I do mean up) the hill was a suitable place for my hammock. There were two name candidates for this camp I suggested Hill Camp but Almost Home Camp won. We spent one night in Almost Home Camp and another in Home Camp. People had camped in Home Camp before. It had gas cams and nails in the trees. I found a snowmobile portage on the east end of the lake. From Home Lake we went west to Island Lake and then north west to a no name lake I called Dolphin Lake. We spent one night in Dolphin Camp. The next day we moved on the Mack Lake. The rest of that trip was stuff everyone has done you know good fishing and campsites.

Moving on to 2025 we went up Baptism and on to Cache Lake. We explored a rout to Zephira Lake. It was a little tougher than I had expected. We decided that with light loads we could make it in one carry. To lighten the load we took no cooking gear and I would sleep in his tent. There is a fire ban so no cooking. It still took most of the day to get there. We found a tent pad in the north east corner of the lake. I just call it Tent Pad. We spent 2 nights at Tent Pad. The lake trout are very dark and the flesh is red. The water is tee stained but tastes good and so did the lake trout. We spent a night on the last portage before Taro Creek. The next day we went up Taro Creek to Taro Lake. We spent one night in Taro Camp. The lake trout in Taro have white/gray flesh and taste better cooked. The next day we headed for Quinn Lake and on the Lemay Lake. We spent 4 nights in Lemay Camp. On day 13 we saw 2 other campers on Sturgeon Lake. The rest of that trip was stuff everyone has done you know good fishing and campsites.
