BWCA Campsite 1178 on Thomas

The landing for this campsite is hidden behind a big boulder on a small bump in the bay, so the boulder is the best landmark to look for. The campsite itself is surrounded by giant white pines, which usually means a great campsite, but this one is much smaller and brushier than I expected. The site is basically a small clearing, about 30 feet by 20 feet, covered in pine duff and surrounded by brush. The white pines make it scenic, and for a solo camper this would actually be an appealing little spot, but it would be tight for a group. The latrine is not far from camp and is in view of much of the campsite. There is one good tent pad, though there are branches about five feet above it, so a taller tent may brush them. A second tent could fit somewhere, but most of the remaining ground is slanted. I would call it one good tent pad and two maximum tent pads. This is a small, scenic site that works better for a solo camper or very small group than for a larger party.

We did not stay here, but got out to check it our. It is a small site with minimal sitting logs. Very closed in with bushes, not many accessible bigger trees. Rocks in front of landing make it necessary to paddle in parallel to the landing. After that getting out to the site is easy. Latrine is encroached by rose bushes. One or 2 tent pads, but there would not be much area to spread out or walk around.
