BWCA Campsite 1387 on Alworth

This is primarily a backpacking campsite along the hiking trail, and from a canoeing perspective it is very limited. It sits high above the lake, which means water access is steep and difficult. The landing is not great. It is very small, and there is no real place to put canoes because the ground just keeps climbing away from the lake. Once you get up to the site, the view over Alworth is nice, and there are a couple of towering white pines in the area that are very pretty. However, there is not much for campsite amenities. I am calling it zero good tent pads and one maximum tent pad. I had trouble finding the site and the spur trail from the hiking trail was barely visible, with downed trees and a need for maintenance. If you are trying to reach it from the hiking trail, pay close attention for the spur. For backpackers, this may be more reasonable, but as a canoe campsite, the landing and lack of tenting make it a very poor option.

Decent enough site surrounded by old white pines. Some of the old pines are standing dead which leave some of the tent pads a little scary. The main detractor is the nearly hazardous access to water which is a steep climb down the ridge and back up. That said, nice enough site. We spent the night here. Doesn't seem to see much traffic. The grate was basically empty and had the saddest camp seating I have ever seen (one boulder less than 2 feet from the grate.) It is good sized for a backpacking site.
