BWCA Portage 184 (Louse)

Most overgrown portage of my life, with several false paths that I got fooled by multiple times! Had to drop the canoe, put it on backwards, walk it out, scout the proper path, then put the canoe back on and finish the portage. Several open areas and spots with beaver paths that did not suggest an obvious direction. Footing is better than the Poe-Louse portage but still tricky at times. Found over a dozen ticks on 2 of us plus gear after double carrying this, so check yourself regularly.

This one has a rocky start on the east end, then the trail ends at a flooded beaver pond. The pond continues for a ways to your left, but you need to bear right against the steep bank for about 5 paddle strokes to the top of a giant 8 foot tall beaver dam. Then unload and make your way around/over the dam to continue the somewhat muddy portage on the other side. The key on this one is keeping your bearings through the swampy area.

A welcome relief after doing the other portage into Louse. Thought it was actually rather scenic as it traces the river bank for a stretch of the trail.
